Vasa Mihich is a renowned Los Angeles-based artist known for his sleek, colorful and captivating acrylic sculptures. He is a Senior Professor of Design at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he has taught color theory for many years.
For nearly 50 years he has been working in acrylics, whether on canvas or through sculpture.
His sculptures, with their different geometric planes suspended in acrylic, are dynamic and endlessly fascinating.
“Plaid Ghost” is one of the most atypical Vasa sculptures we have handled to date. Typically the artist employs bold neon colors and patterns. In this work the artist creates a fine-lined grid of translucent sky blue and cherry red that is suspended in the center of the sculpture. The solid lines gently disintegrate as they approach the perimeter of the sculpture, creating a ghost-like effect. Whereas many of Vasa's sculptures recall the hard-edge abstract paintings of the 1960's and 70's in a three-dimensional form, here the aesthetic and tone of the work is more in line with Agnes Martin, rather than say Frank Stella or Larry Zox.
Perhaps the most striking element of this work is the calculated arrangement of each line. The vertical lines, which are unevenly dispersed on the front of the sculpture, seem to unify when viewed from the side, creating a nearly inexplicable illusion that requires further investigation.
